School of Metallurgy and Environment Successfully Holds 2025 Laboratory Safety Carnival Event
Time:2025-12-23 Visits:
To further strengthen laboratory safety awareness and enhance the emergency response capabilities of faculty and students, the School of Metallurgy and Environment at Central South University successfully held a Laboratory Safety Carnival event on the front plaza of the Metallurgy Building on October 23, 2025. Focusing on key laboratory safety points, the event innovatively adopted a format of "scenario-based practice + interactive experience," featuring five core practical segments designed to ensure safety knowledge is thoroughly understood and effectively applied.
The event site featured five interactive experience zones with rich content and novel formats: In the "Reagent Match-Up" segment, participants drew label cards of chemical reagents such as mercuric chloride and nitric acid and accurately placed them into corresponding reagent category zones, effectively reinforcing their understanding of hazardous chemical classification in the laboratory. The "Safety Wheel of Fortune" segment employed a random Q&A format, covering critical areas like fire safety, electrical safety, and management of common laboratory hazardous chemicals, comprehensively testing the safety knowledge of participants. For the "Hidden Hazard Blind Box Draw," participants, after drawing a blind box, had to quickly identify the potential laboratory safety hazard contained within and propose targeted corrective measures, effectively improving risk identification and prevention skills. The "Hazardous Waste Sorting Challenge" required participants to accurately place cards representing different types of waste into corresponding "hazardous waste containers," helping them familiarize themselves with laboratory waste classification standards and disposal protocols, and encouraging the development of proper operational habits. In the "Fire Extinguisher Toss" segment, participants first determined the type of fire and then tossed a sandbag into the area marked with the corresponding fire extinguisher type. This interactive approach fostered an intuitive understanding of how to respond to different fire scenarios and select the appropriate extinguisher.
Additionally, a themed photo booth was set up at the event, where faculty and students took pictures holding fun signs such as "Lab Safety Expert" and "I Love CSU," further fostering a positive atmosphere of "prioritizing safety everywhere and emphasizing prevention by everyone."
The Laboratory Safety Carnival represents a significant initiative by the School to innovate safety education methods and solidify safety management foundations. Through its engaging and practical approach, the event promotes a shift in laboratory safety norms from "passive acceptance" to "active internalization," significantly enhancing the effectiveness of safety education. Moving forward, the School of Metallurgy and Environment will continue to explore new models for safety education, continually enriching its content and formats, to fully reinforce laboratory safety defenses and provide a solid security guarantee for teaching and research activities.
