Gathering Talents and Wisdom, Deliberating on the Future of Steel|NAE Member Professor Alan W. Cramb Visits CSU's Master Scholars Academic Forum

Time:2025-12-23    Visits:

On October 28, 2025, Professor Alan W. Cramb, Member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and former President of the Illinois Institute of Technology, was invited to the Master Scholars Academic Forum of Central South University (CSU). He delivered a specialized academic report titled "Past, Present and Future: Understanding Future Trends in Steel Production" in Meeting Room 1, South Science and Education Building. The forum was hosted by Professor Wang Wanlin.

Beginning with the historical context of steel production, Professor Cramb systematically analyzed the current technological challenges facing the industry and offered forward-looking insights into development directions such as decarbonization, intellectualization, and efficiency enhancement. His perspectives on clean steel production and initial solidification in continuous casting provided valuable academic inspiration for the attending faculty and students.

Following the lecture, Professor Cramb, accompanied by Professor Wang Wanlin, visited the laboratories of the Iron and Steel Research Institute at the School of Metallurgy and Environment. Subsequently, he engaged in a discussion with faculty members from the Institute in Meeting Room 228 of the Metallurgy Building. The discussion covered a wide range of topics including high-speed continuous casting, clean metallurgy, and AI applications, jointly exploring technical difficulties and innovative pathways within the industry.

It is reported that Professor Alan William Cramb is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Materials Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology, a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and served as President (2015-2021) and previously Provost of the Illinois Institute of Technology. He earned his B.Sc. in Metallurgy from the University of Strathclyde in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. An internationally renowned expert in materials engineering and a pioneer in steel metallurgy and continuous casting, Professor Cramb has over 40 years of research experience in materials science and engineering. He has conducted numerous pioneering studies in areas such as initial solidification behavior of steel, solidification of liquid oxides, clean steel production, and initial solidification phenomena in continuous casting molds. He has authored more than 200 academic papers published in various internationally recognized journals. His notable roles include serving as President of the Iron & Steel Society (2000) and President of The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (2005). He also previously served as the Director of the Center for Iron and Steelmaking Research at Carnegie Mellon University.
